Massive manhunt for Bartica massacre death row inmate

‘Smallie’ following daring escapes from Mazaruni Prison

 

A manhunt has been launched for Bartica massacre convict Mark Royden Williams AKA “Smallie”,who escaped from the Mazaruni Prison today.

 

A brief statement from prison officials said that Williams escaped “with the assistance of external persons,” a few hours ago and that the Joint services is pursuing him.

 

Williams is on death row for killing 12 persons during the massacre in Bartica, Region Seven. He was also found guilty in 2022 of the 2008 murder of Guyana Defence Force (GDF) member, Corporal Ivor Williams.

 

In 2017, a jury found Williams and Dennis “Anaconda” Williams guilty for the 2008 Bartica Massacre, which left 12 persons, including three policemen dead. The men were sentenced to death for that crime.  They filed an appeal against the conviction and sentence.

 

Williams is said to have shot Corporal Ivor Williams on January 23, 2008, during a confrontation between the GDF and gunmen at Buxton, East Coast Demerara.

 

In February 2019, Williams and Sherwin Nero, also known as ‘Catty’, were acquitted of the August 30, 2007 murder of businessman, Kumar Singh called “Mango Man”.
