Last evening, a devastating fire of unknown origin broke out on Bush Lot Public Road, West Coast Berbice, between 17:45 and 22:30 hours.

The blaze completely destroyed two buildings, partially damaged a third, and resulted in the death of Carl Persaud, who resided at Lot 16 ‘B’ Bush Lot Public Road.

The lower flat of Persaud’s two-storey home housed the Nalico & Nafico Insurance Office, both of which were completely destroyed.

Initial inquiries revealed that Carl Persaud, who lived alone and was known to be an alcoholic, was seen pushing his hand through his bedroom window around 17:40 hours as the fire rapidly engulfed his home. The blaze quickly spread to nearby buildings and businesses.

The property of Ruth Persaud at Lot 15 ‘B’ Bush Lot was also destroyed. The upper flat of this home was vacant, while the lower flat housed Medical Aid Pharmacy, owned by Rochelle Cheefoon, and Ramesh’s Jewelry, owned by Ramesh Persaud. Both businesses were completely destroyed.

The property at Lot 17 ‘B’ Bush Lot, owned by Sundnrada Jagmohan, a 46-year-old teacher, was partially damaged. This two-storey concrete building had its upper floor partly burnt, while the lower floor housed two businesses.

Authorities, including Commander Region 5 AC K. Simon and several officers, visited the scene around 18:00 hours.

Sub-Division Officer Chesney and his team from the Onverwagt Fire Station arrived promptly, followed by assistance from the Mahaica Fire Station, New Amsterdam Fire Station, and GUYSCO Fire Department.
