Speaker Manzoor Nadir suspended this Wednesday afternoon’s sitting as opposition Members of Parliament demanded that the House and Speaker address what they alleged is assault of an opposition Member of Parliament by government minister and MP Kwame McCoy.
Opposition Chief Whip Christopher Jones stood in the House as examination of the estimates were ongoing and asked that the Speaker suspend the meeting of the Committee of Supplies and reconvene the National Assembly to address with the matter in National Assembly, “We have 18 members of parliament who are standing on their feet and in keeping with the standing orders, we must be heard,” Jones told the Speaker.
Speaker Nadir told the MPs that he would have reconvened the National Assembly after the examination of the estimates for the agency, “I’ll finish this head, we will ask for a suspension and we will hear the comments about what happens.”
Jones then replied that “this is not a light matter, one of our female members was assaulted by Kwame McCoy.” The Opposition MPs continued calling on the Speaker for the matter to be heard before the sitting was suspended.
