Cop to stand trial for allegedly raping child

Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus on Friday committed a Police constable to stand trial at the High Court for rape.

Police Constable Michael Kendall was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which alleges that on December 3, 2020, at Georgetown, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under the age of 16.

The matter against Eon Franklin, who was also charged with raping the minor, is still ongoing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Following a Paper Committal, Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus ruled that the prosecution led sufficient evidence to put Kendall on trial for the offence. Accordingly, the rape accused will stand trial by a jury before a judge at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Criminal Assizes.

Kendall remains on $300,000 bail pending the hearing and determination of his trial.
