Narcotics on-board Bajan registered vessel in Demerara River; six arrested

Six persons including two Barbadians and four Guyanese nationals have been detained following an operation by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit in the Demerara River on Wednesday evening in the vicinity of Friendship.

BIG Smith News Watch has been informed that the vessel CV 1 Barbados W.I which is registered in Barbados was at the time carrying close to one hundred fifty-three pounds of poppy weed.

CANU agents suspect that narcotics which was identified as ‘poppy weed’ was destined for Barbados. The four Guyanese who were found on-board the vessel are all set to be unemployed.

The operation in Guyana was a joint one with support from at least one regional country that supplied Guyana with certain information about the activities of the vessel and its operators.

Based on the type of marijuana that was confiscated on the vessel, it has a street value of GY $560,000 per pound while in Barbados it is sold for $8,000 Barbadian dollars.
