Man who raped 12-Y-O boy sent to jail for 18 years
A 44-year-old man who was sometime last month found guilty of raping a 12-year-old boy has been sent to prison for the next 18 years. The man, Wazir Potter was indicted by State Prosecutors Sarah Martin and Nafeezah Baig for rape of a child under 16 years.
A 12-member jury found that on August 08, 2018, in Demerara, Potter engaged in sexual penetration with the child. During a sentencing hearing on Thursday, Justice Brassington Reynolds told Potter that he violated the boy’s bodily integrity in the most “dehumanizing way”.
The High Court Judge told the child rapist that removing him from society is the least the court can do in joining forces with the rest of society to show its face against sexual violence against children. In a victim impact statement, it was revealed that the boy, who is now 15, has displayed suicidal tendencies.
On the day in question, the young boy was standing on a bridge not too far from Potter’s house. Potter grabbed the young man from behind, covered his mouth, and carried him into his house. The boy was taken by Potter into a bedroom where he was placed on a bed.
Potter then covered the teen’s mouth with his hand and raped him. The child told the Court that he was in pain throughout the ordeal which lasted for about 20 to 30 minutes. Notwithstanding the jury’s verdict, Potter has maintained his innocence, and in doing so, has accused the teen of framing him.
