Human Services Ministry targets Venezuelan women in livelihood initiative
In response to the needs of Venezuelan migrants who are women and who arrived in Guyana seeking a better quality of life, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is expanding its Garment and Accessories Cottage Industry Initiative to train those persons.
This will see more female migrants benefiting from entrepreneurial opportunities.
The Initiative will be coordinated and managed by the Guyana Women’s Leadership Institute (GWLI) which is the Ministry’s premier business incubator that directly targets women.
Female migrants who reside in Regions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7, and know how to sew can submit their applications no later than 11:59 pm on March 14, 2021 to the Ministry.
The online application form is available at the Ministry’s website: https://mhsss.gov.gy/forms.html or be uplifted from the Information Desk at the Ministry’s Water and Cornhill Streets location, Stabroek market, Georgetown or regional offices in the specific regions. In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Tuesday also committed to ensuring that there is fairness and equity in the treatment of migrants
During his address at the virtual launch of the Migration Governance Indicators Assessment, hosted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Foreign Secretary, Robert Persaud, said Guyana has been seeing a large inflow of migrants seeking refuge, particularly from neighbouring Venezuela.
“We therefore, see the need to provide resources within our capacity to augment the efforts of all our partners in ensuring that there is fairness and equity in responding to the situation of migrants. These are the basic tenets that will underscore a National Migration Policy,” he said.
As of 2020, reports are that over 14,000 Venezuelans have migrated to Guyana.
