Henry families cling to hope through parliamentary motion
The main crux of the motion for the National Assembly to call on the Police to “expedite” the investigations and bring to justice the perpetrators. This motion was submitted to the Clerk of the National Assembly Sherlock Issacs by APNU AFC members of parliament, led by senior MP and Former Speaker of the House Raphael Trotman and Shadow Home Affairs Minister Geeta Chandon-Edmond. The motion speaks directly to the killings of the Henry cousins and Haresh Singh. Trotman feels that swift condemnation of the crimes along with their expedited resolution are important, “the longer it takes for the crimes to be solved the greater the inferences that the public will draw, the more pain the families will feel,” Trotman told reporters.
A similar motion was not allowed following the opening of this parliament, “We would not want to say that the Speaker is denying the voices of the people,” Trotman said when asked if he is optimistic that this motion would reach the floor, “We have made changes with the expectations that this time around he would will see the wisdom in sending them through”. Trotman said
Clerk of the National Assembly Sherlock Issacs assured the opposition that he would treat the motion with “dispatch,” as he said the motion would be submitted to Speaker Manzoor Nadir with his views.
“I am very disgusted at this situation, I need justice for my child, the police not working on what they are supposed to work on,” Joel’s mother, Gale Johnson told the media, she was at Parliament building along with the parents of Isiah for the handing in of the motion. Isiah’s father expected that the evidence sent for forensic tests would have yielded results that would have helped the investigation, “we were fairly confident before,” Gladstone Henry said, “this has made us very much concerned as where we headed with justice,” the father said.
It has been some 70 days since the murder of the Henry cousins and 68 days since the murder of Haresh Singh. Last week the police said it had made another set of arrests in relation to the murders.
