Father and daughter found guilty of killing Essequibo fisherman
Following a second trial on Wednesday, former Region Three AFC councillor Mandy Sukhdeo, and her father, Surendra Sukhdeo, a former Good Hope/ Hydronie Neighbourhood Democratic Council APNU councillor, were found guilty of manslaughter over the fatal beating of a fisherman.
The two Sukhdeos and their neighbour, Rean Ghani had been on trial for the capital offence of murder before Demerara High Court Judge Jo Ann Barlow.
The jurors, after deliberating for a little over two hours, found Surendra Sukhdeo and his daughter not guilty of murder but guilty on the lesser count of manslaughter.
They unlawfully killed 22-year-old Shereffudeen Nazamudeen called “Sheriff” on February 14, 2017, at Ruby, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).
Ghani was found not guilty of both murder and manslaughter and was thereby discharged.
A sentencing hearing for the two convicted killers is set for September 8.
Mandy Sukhdeo; her father, Surendra Sukhdeo; and their neighbour, Rean Ghani were first tried for the crime in 2021, but at that time, the jury was deadlocked and unable to arrive at verdicts.
As such, they were further remanded to prison pending a new trial.
It was previously reported that Nazamudeen of Lot 117 Ruby, East Bank Essequibo, was beaten to death after he allegedly attempted to snatch Mandy Sukhdeo’s handbag.
The fisherman, who sustained several injuries to his body, died at the Leonora Cottage Hospital. He was severely beaten with pieces of wood.
