Magistrate throws man up to High Court for footballer's murder

L-R Dead: Christopher Mansfield and murder accused Shamar Harvey

To stand trial at the High Court in Demerara for murder is 23-year-old Shamar Harvey of Albouystown, Greater Georgetown. It is alleged that on March 31, 2019, at Albouystown, he murdered 18-year-old Christopher Mansfield called “Gully Bop.”

Senior Magistrate Leron Daly ruled that having considered the prosecution’s evidence, she believed that a prima facie case had been made out against the murder accused for the capital offence. Accordingly, she committed him to stand trial by a jury before a judge at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Criminal Assizes.

Mansfield, a footballer, was shot three times about his body and died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. At the time of the shooting, he was on his way to a football game when he was accosted by three men at Cooper Street, Albouystown.

The men reportedly approached on bicycles and were armed with a cutlass, a knife, and a gun. It was reported that Mansfield was shot to the right side of his abdomen. It is believed that the shooting was gang-related.
