“Chappy” found guilty of wounding relative with hammer
Compton Fecker, called “Chappy” was on Friday found guilty by a jury of wounding his son’s father-in-law whom he dealt several blows to the head with a hammer. At the start of his trial before Justice Brassington Reynolds, Fecker pleaded not guilty to a charge for attempt to commit murder committed on Alvin Melvin.
State Prosecutor Seeta Bishundial also presented an alternate indictment for the lesser count of felonious wounding. The prosecutor had advised the jury that if there was not sufficient evidence to convict Fecker on the attempted murder charge, then they should consider the lesser count.
The facts of the case are that in March 2015, Fecker and Melville were involved in a heated argument. During the row, Fecker pulled out a hammer and dealt Melville several blows to the head. Melville was knocked unconscious and was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital. However, due to the severity of his injuries he had to be transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was hospitalized for about a week.
At the time of the incident, Fecker’s son and Melville’s daughter shared a relationship. They all resided at Parika, Sea Dam, East Bank Essequibo. Justice Reynolds remanded Fecker to prison pending sentencing in light of the conviction.
The convict returns to court on February 03, 2021, for presentation of probation report, plea in mitigation and sentencing. He was represented by attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson, and was on trial at the Demerara High Court.
