$25,000 cash grant for hinterland and riverain residents, free fertilizer for farmers
President Irfaan Ali on Monday announced that the Government will be providing a one-off cash grant to residents in the hinterland and riverain areas along with free fertiliser to farmers.
In a live statement, the President said the special one-off grant to every single household in riverain and hinterland communities will total $800M. These persons he said have suffered most of the brunt from the increased cost of living.
“We as a caring government and as a government that has been consulting with the Guyanese people and as a government that has been looking at ways to ease the hardships of Guyanese people,” the Head of State noted.
Further, he said the Government will purchase $1B in fertiliser to be distributed to farmers. This, the President said is expected to reduce the overall input cost for farmers in the cultivation of their crops, thereby ensuring adequate output and reducing the hike in food prices.
The President also announced measures to benefit the housing and construction sectors to make homeownership easier for Guyanese. These include the removal of VAT on additional construction materials and assistance to construct homes on government house lots.
He noted that these measures are in addition to those taken by the government over the past two years to reduce the cost of living.
