Women in Law Enforcement Empowerment Summit opens at Eve Leary
The Women in Law Enforcement Summit kicked off at the Officers’ Training Centre yesterday, with the theme “Inspiring Inclusion, Advancing Women in Law Enforcement.”
Deputy Commissioner ‘Administration’ Mr. Calvin Brutus, in his opening address, praised the remarkable progress made by women in law enforcement, highlighting their strength, resilience, and unwavering commitment to public safety.
However, he acknowledged the ongoing struggle for true inclusion, stressing the importance of women’s representation in leadership roles within law enforcement agencies.
He emphasized the significance of diversity in fostering understanding and collaboration, ultimately leading to safer communities. The summit, a collaborative effort between the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), and the Women’s Chamber of Commerce, underscores a commitment to fostering change.
Mr. Brutus outlined strategies to promote gender equality, including dismantling unconscious bias in promotion processes and creating pathways for women to reach leadership positions.
He highlighted the importance of mentorship programs and peer support networks in retention and advancement and emphasized the need for dialogue and collaboration with women’s organizations and diverse communities.
Mr. Brutus also stressed the role of technology in empowering women officers and urged attendees to advocate for change and celebrate diversity in law enforcement. He called upon all present to become champions for inclusion and work towards building a safer and more just society where women thrive in law enforcement.
